Bakheng Temple

Phnom Bakheng was built at the end of the 9th century during the reign of King Yasovarman and became the centre of his new capital, Yasodharapura.

Its five tiers carry rows of small sanctuary towers arranged to mirror a cosmic diagram, crowned by a quincunx at the summit.

Because the hill rises above the surrounding forest it offers a long view toward Angkor Wat, which makes it the most popular place at Angkor to watch the sun go down. Visitor numbers at the summit are limited.
